How Long do mattresses last?

How Long Do Mattresses Last?

Given that you spend so much of your life asleep and in bed, it makes sense to invest in a quality mattress that you will be completely comfortable sleeping on. Even the best mattresses on the market don’t last forever, though, and it is quite natural for a mattress to degrade over time. Still, how much use can you expect to get out of your mattress before starting to look for a replacement?

Most mattresses have an average lifespan of roughly 7-10 years. Of course, that can be shortened or lengthened depending on a variety of factors. One of the main factors that have a significant impact on how long your mattress will last is the materials that it is made of. For instance, latex and high-density polyfoam tend to last much longer than low-density polyfoam.

The quality of your mattress generally affects how long it will last, as well, since mattresses tend to follow the golden rule of “you get what you pay for.” Cheap, entry-level mattresses are likely to wear quickly and may need to be replaced much sooner. In contrast, high-end hybrid mattresses that are more expensive and of better quality will probably last longer in most cases.

Believe it or not, the way that you sleep can also affect the duration of your mattress’ life. A combination of your weight and the sleep position you typically have can impact the amount of wear on your mattress. If you are a bit heavier, you may find your mattress sagging prematurely. Frequently sleeping on your side can have the same effect.

How to Know That Your Mattress Needs to Be Replaced

If you continue to use a mattress that has reached the end of its lifespan, it will likely no longer be comfortable, and you probably will not be able to get a good sleep on it anymore. However, aside from the changes to your quality of sleep, how can you tell when your mattress has reached the end of the line? Here are a few of the telltale signs that your mattress needs to be replaced:

1. Sagging

Sagging typically occurs when your mattress’ coils begin to weaken or the shape of its memory foam starts to shift, both of which are signs that your mattress should be replaced. If you get off your mattress and it does not return to its normal flat appearance, but rather you see a noticeable impression in the spot where you typically sleep, it could be time for your mattress to go.

2. Increased noise

Is your mattress silent when you sit or lay down on it, or does it make squeaking or screeching metal sounds? Such sounds may be especially noticeable when you have a mattress that contains coils. In some cases, the issue can be fixed by tightening the bolts in your mattress or box spring.

However, as coils age, they do not provide as much support anymore, so if you notice these sounds more frequently, it could be another indication that your mattress is too worn.

3. Bad smell

Unfortunately, as time goes on, it is possible for things like mould, mildew, or fungi to build up within your mattress, especially when you live in a fairly humid climate. Over time, that will begin to create an unpleasant musty smell.

Once your mattress starts to stink, it will be nearly impossible to get comfortable on it. Even spraying air fresheners or using other techniques to mask the smell will not fix the root of the problem, so the mattress will need to be replaced.

4. Allergy aggravation

The build-up of mould, mildew, or dust mites in your mattress can also aggravate your allergies. If you normally suffer from allergies, but you find that your symptoms are much worse than normal, your mattress could be the culprit.

If you often have watery eyes, a runny nose, and a headache after spending the night on your mattress, it is time to get a new one.

Causing pain

The point of sleep is to allow your body to rest and heal. If you are waking up with serious pain, something is clearly wrong. Once your mattress starts to provide less support, you may start to experience pain in your neck, shoulders, and hips, which are the areas that your mattress may no longer relieve pressure from while you sleep.

It is also not uncommon to experience lower back pain when your mattress is worn. The pain and discomfort will only get worse with time if your mattress is not replaced.

How Junk Works Can Help You Get Rid of Your Old Mattress

If you have experienced one or more of the situations mentioned above with your mattress, you will probably want to get a new one so that you can get back to having quality sleep. Still, before getting a new mattress, you will inevitably need to get rid of the old one. Fortunately, Junk Works can help take it off your hands since we specialize in junk removal in Toronto.

Unlike most things that you can just throw in a trash bag when you are finished with them, a mattress’ big size and bulky shape make it harder to discard. However, no matter what size or type of mattress you have, our experienced crew is here to help make that easier for you.

Rather than trying to move your old mattress through your house and off your property on your own, and potentially scuffing up the floors or hurting yourself in the process, why not let our team of experts handle all of that for you?

Our mattress disposal process is quick and easy. Once you fill out our simple online form or give us a call, we will be there in no time to remove your old mattress, freeing up space for your new one. We will always be prompt, courteous, and respectful throughout the entire process, and if you have any questions, we are always glad to answer them.

Therefore, we will dispose of your mattress in the most eco-friendly way possible. Typically, after loading it onto our truck, we will take it to a nearby recycling facility rather than a landfill.
