Getting Your Home Ready For The Fall

We’re just days away from the fall leaf show. This is when the trees everywhere burst with color and pumpkin flavor is added to everything. It is the time of the year that gives us our first hint of the holidays to come. You can bet that as soon as stores clear out Halloween candy, the Christmas decorations won’t be far behind. Before that happens, there are some things you can do around the house to get your home ready for the fall. Here’s what should happen:

Clean the Fireplace

As the temps turn cooler, you’ll be tempted to fire up the fireplace. Before that happens, it is important that you get your fireplace and chimney cleaned. This is especially vital if you skipped last year’s cleaning. A fall/winter season of fires can add a lot of soot to that chimney. That can actually become a hazard but one that is easily take care of with help from a professional chimney sweep.

Stock up Firewood

While the fireplace is getting cleaned, you can replenish your firewood pile. Although you might be able to find some farms that allow for a “chop your own” wood experience, you would probably be better serve just getting your firewood delivered. It should be stored in an area away from the side of the house. Whenever rain or snow comes, be sure to move in as much wood into the house to keep it dry.

Check the Furnace

All across the country HVAC techs are working in overdrive as homeowners get their furnaces checked. A little fall maintenance will go a long way toward preventing a shut down when things get really cold. An inspection can also reveal the need for replacement. Again, it is better to know this now then when the furnace breaks down.

Plant Bulbs

Believe it or not, you can do some serious gardening at this time of year that doesn’t involve “harvesting.” This is when you want to plant bulbs that will bloom in spring. Tulips, iris, daffodils and lilies can all make a nice appearance in April if you get those bulbs in the ground now.

Get Rid of Rubbish

You don’t need to be surrounded by old furniture and appliances one day more. Thankfully, Junk Works is standing by with a crew and a truck to make all your rubbish disappear.
