How To Organize Your Closet In Four Easy Steps

Do you live in fear of your closet? We’re not talking about some creature hiding in there or a portal to another dimension. Instead, your fear can be based on the notion that every time you open the closet, there is an avalanche of clothes, shoes and general junk. If that happens, then clearly it’s time to organize your closet. Yes, this is one of those jobs you’ve been putting off for quite some time now. Trust me, when you knock out this project, you’ll feel great. Plus, it will certainly help your time management if you’re able to find what you’re looking for a lot faster. Here then are the four easy steps you need to take to organize your closet once and for all.

Step 1: Empty The Closet

You knew this one was coming. The only way to truly organize your closet is to pull everything out. That is the only way to get a handle on what’s in there and can get a true sense of how to improve the space. Before you begin, crank up the tunes and make it a party!

Step 2: Separate Your Items

Now that you’ve got everything pulled out of the closet, it’s time to make some tough decisions. You want to create three piles: Keep, donate, trash. Every item in your closet should fit into one of those piles. With your shoes and clothes, ask the question, “When was the last time I wore this?” If the answer was over a year, then it’s a safe bet you might not be slipping on that item anytime soon.

You’ll probably find a lot of stuff that will have you asking, “How did that get in here?” An organized closet means a closet with focus. You shouldn’t have old computers or appliances in your bedroom closet. Toss or donate.

Step 3: Clean The Closet

Take advantage of that empty closet by wiping down the shelves, moping the floor and removing all the dust bunnies. A clean closet is a happy closet.

Step 4: Utilize The Space

Now that you’ve got a good idea of all the things you want to put back into the closet, take a moment to consider how you can better utilize that space. Consider bringing in bins or baskets for the shelves and/or floors. Use these to further separate your items. You might even want to incorporate additional shelving units. The goal is for you to take one glance into your closet and be able to see exactly what you need.

As for the “donating or trashing,” one call to Junk Works will take care of that. These are the professional junk haulers who can clear out any pile of rubbish in no time at all.
