How to dispose of a hot tub?

How Do You Dispose of a Hot Tub?

Hot tubs are great investments; until you have to replace them. When the time comes to get rid of or replace your hot tub, it can be challenging to break it down and haul away on your own.

Hot tub disposal requires you to fully dismantle the unit to remove it from your yard. Not to mention, once it is broken down, several parts and components must be properly disposed of, as well.

For instance, some of the components contain hazardous material that can’t go into a regular landfill site, so you need to know where to take certain parts of your old tub.

Even if you are successful in dismantling your hot tub, face it, it’s not going to fit inside your family car — even if it’s a big car.

So, what do you do when you need to dispose of your old hot tub? Below, we offer several solutions to help you out.

Know Your Options

Before you go ahead and condemn yourself to a DIY and your hot tub to the dumb, you absolutely need to consider these more simple and environmentally friendly ways of disposing of it first!

  1. Trade-in

  2. If you plan on upgrading to a new hot tub, you should talk to your local dealer about trade-in packages that they may offer. Many dealers have great trade-in options, and they will offer you a discount on a new unit of your choice.

Typically, dealerships refurbish old hot tubs and resell them at a discounted price. Trade-in is a good, no-fuss way to get rid of your hot tub quickly and efficiently. It’s a win-win situation for all.

  3. Sell it yourself

  4. Another great option to avoid having to dispose of your old hot tub on your own — without contributing to landfill waste — is selling it online. Many great websites will help you easily advertise it online to potential buyers, and there is always someone looking for a great deal. We’re sure you will end up with a few potential customers. If your hot tub is in good shape, you should be able to get a good price for it that you can pocket or put towards a new unit.

  5. Disposal company

  6. If your hot tub is not worth saving, you can save yourself a ton of work and hire a disposal company to take it away for you! Most disposal companies will purchase hot tubs and recycle the usable parts or attempt to refurbish it. The benefit of disposal companies, like ours at Junk Works, is that other people haul it away — saving you from doing it yourself.

Be prepared to pay $150 and up to have your hot tub removed from your property. However, the easier you can make the disposal company’s job, the more money you can save on disposal. It would help if you did everything possible to prepare your hot tub for removal. Here is what you can do:

    • Disconnect the power and gas
    • Drain the water and let the unit dry out
    • Clear a path for the hot tub to be removed, including leaves, snow, furniture, and other items
    • Make sure the hot tub can be moved around the outside of your house it will cost you big time if a crane is necessary for the job
  7. Do it yourself

  8. As discussed above, you can definitely dispose of a hot tub yourself. However, if you decide to go with this option, safety is a priority. Gloves and safety goggles should be worn at all times. Here is how you should go about DIYing your hot tub disposal:

  • Read the manual
  • Disconnect the water, electrical, and gas lines, and drain and dry your hot tub
  • All removable elements should be taken out — lights, jets, etc.
  • Cut the surrounding acrylic into easy-to-carry pieces
  • Remove the foam inside of the vinyl covering and cut it into sections

No matter which decision you make, there will be costs, and there will be benefits. As long as you are informed, you can dispose of your hot tub in no time at all!
