Ways to dispose of an old mattress

A Few Ways to Dispose of an Old Mattress

If you are planning on a mattress removal, you may not be sure where to start. There are many reasons why people may feel the need to get rid of their old mattresses.

For instance, their physical needs may have changed over the years due to age, weight changes, or injuries. They may simply feel like they need an upgrade, either for aesthetical or practical reasons. Regardless of the reason, if you are interested in a mattress removal, then there are a few different ways to dispose of it, as we shall see below.

Donate It

An easy and generous way to get rid of your mattress is to donate it to a charity or local shelter. By doing so, you will be helping an impoverished person or a destitute family, while also making room for a new mattress for your own home.

However, if you want to donate your old mattress, you need to ensure that it is in good condition. It must be clean and should not have bed bugs. The mattress must not have any large tears, holes, rips, or any stains.

Fortunately, you may be able to clean your old mattress by spot cleaning it or vacuuming it. The mattress must also be devoid of unpleasant odours. If your mattress is in good condition, you should be able to donate it.

If you need help finding a local charity, you can use Donationtown.org to browse through their extensive database of charities. Some local charities will even come to your home to pick up your old mattress.

Give it Away

If you can’t find a charity or shelter to take your mattress, your next option would be to give it away.

You can also take advantage of the multiple social media platforms at your disposal, such as Facebook and Twitter, to announce that you have a free mattress to give away to the first person who responds to your post.

However, to avoid potentially disappointing or angering people, you should be honest about the size, brand, and condition of the mattress. We suggest including photos and other relevant information or images that can help “sell” your mattress to people who notice the posting.

Another option is to place flyers at nearby college campuses, community centers, high schools, and coffee shops if all else fails.

Recycle Your Old Mattress

In some cases, your mattress may be unusable by people due to its age and condition. If the scenario above applies to you, you can recycle your mattress.

Unfortunately, many people simply throw their old mattresses in the garbage, where they are transported to landfills. Each discarded mattress will occupy roughly 40 cubic feet of space, and an estimated 20 million mattresses end up in landfills each year.

The good news is roughly 85% of the mattresses that are discarded can be recycled. However, recycling laws will differ, depending on the state, province, city, or country that you live in, so please check local ordinances before deciding if recycling your mattress is a viable option.

If you can recycle your mattress, start by contacting a local recycling centre. Some will be willing to take your old mattress for free while others may charge a small service fee to pick up and recycle your mattress for you.

Suppose you are having trouble finding a local recycling center, you can try using the many free recycling databases available online, such as Earth 911 and Bye Bye Mattress. If all else fails, you can also try local residential facilities and municipal offices.

Throw it Out

In some cases, your mattress may not be eligible for a donation or recycling. If either of the scenarios above applies to you, another option is to throw out your old mattress.

You may not be able to simply drag the mattress to the curb and call it a day, as many towns, cities, and provinces have specific rules and ordinances about throwing away mattresses. Hence, you may not be able to legally throw away an entire mattress, and trying to do so may result in a hefty fine or ticket.

The only way to know for sure is to find the rules for your province or city via a quick Google search. For example, your city may allow you to throw away your mattress with the rest of your garbage on garbage day, provided that you wrap it in a plastic mattress bag that is specifically designed to house it.

Or, you may only be required to tightly wrap it in conventional plastic instead. Certain places have monthly heavy trash pickup days whereby garbage collectors will increase their capacity to pick up heavy appliances and furniture, such as old mattresses.

Again, you should check to see if your community offers such a service. Finally, if you are unable to throw out your mattress, you can ask your new mattress company if they will remove your old mattress after they have delivered your new one.

Some will do so for free, while others may charge a small pickup fee. Yet another option is to contact a waste disposal company. They will get rid of the garbage that cannot be disposed of via conventional methods and will often sort and recycle materials on your behalf.
