5 signs you need to get rid of your mattress

5 Signs You Need to Get Rid of Your Mattress

Have you checked up on your mattress lately? If not, you probably should.

Sleep is one of the most important factors for our mental and physical health, and something we need to prioritize. We often focus on lifestyle factors, what time we’re waking up, and even nighttime routines to help us get to a deeper state of relaxation. However, have you considered the very thing you sleep on? Mattresses are crucial to a good night’s rest and help transform your sleep quality.

Most people change up their pillows and duvet covers often enough, but it is usually the mattress that lies forgotten. If you’re unsure if your mattress is good for use or time for the landfill, then read on. Here are 5 signs that it’s time to get rid of your mattress:

 1. It’s over 7 years old

The Better Sleep Council reports that over 70% of people have owned their mattress for more than 7 years. If that includes you, then it’s probably time for a change. Although switching up your mattress depends on many factors like wear and tear, sleep patterns, and the quality of the product, a good rule of thumb to follow is to not exceed 7 years of sleep on the same mattress. You may ask why, and the answer is simple. Good mattresses are designed to adapt to the shape of our bodies and movements, and over time this adaptive quality reduces. This means that your old mattress isn’t working as hard for you and could be impacting your sleep quality detrimentally.

2. The mattress is infested

This one’s a no-brainer. If you have any sort of bugs, insects, or infestation in your mattress, then it’s time to say goodbye. When mattresses exceed a certain age, dust mites can become a problem too. Mattresses are notoriously hard to clean, and armed with even the best bug-repellant sprays, it’s hard to make sure every inch of the item is squeaky clean.

Our team at Junk Works has been dealing with discarded mattresses for a long time, and we suggest immediate removal of the item from your premises. Many people leave their discarded mattress outside their home, but we advise against this. If the contaminated mattress comes in contact with other people, then it can be cause for public health risks. Instead, schedule a mattress pickup; we’ll come pick it up and safely dispose of it. You can even schedule a pickup on the same day that your new mattress gets delivered, which is helpful for space constraints or figuring out where to sleep.

3. You’re never well rested

If your body’s telling you that the surface you’re sleeping on isn’t working for you, then listen to it. If you wake up sore, numb, or with aches and pains each day, then it’s a clear sign that you need a better mattress. If you’re getting the recommended amount of sleeping hours, but still struggle to sleep every day, then you won’t get to the deep sleep state. Chiropractors will tell you that one of the easiest ways to feel rested and healthy is to sleep on a mattress that works with your body ergonomically, and not against it. If you struggle with any health issues or have sleep apnea, then it is crucial for your long-term health that you deepen your sleep every night.

Here’s a tip to tell if it’s the mattress that’s causing discomfort or another lifestyle factor: if you’re more comfortable sleeping on a surface other than your bed (such as a couch, another bedroom, or a hotel bed), then it’s probably the mattress that’s the culprit here.

4. It looks overused

Another way to gauge the lifespan of your mattress is to examine how it’s looking externally. While simply observing the wear and tear on a mattress won’t tell you how it’s working internally, this is still a solid indicator of the state of the item. If your mattress is ripped, stained, damaged, or generally falling apart, then it isn’t helping you much. Other common signs of overuse are if the mattress is sagging or has uneven areas depending on where and how you sleep. A sagging mattress suggests that it is unable to support your body, thus no longer helping you in your time of R&R.

5. You have experienced significant changes

We all go through changes in our life cycle, and it’s hard to expect the mattress to keep up with us through it all. Weight gain or loss due to pregnancy, illness, diet, or accident can lead to changes in how we use our mattress. Even if the mattress is in good condition, what supported you a couple of years ago may not work for your body, age, or sleeping patterns today. If the mattress works well for your body and it’s just a matter of firmness or softness, then consider getting a mattress topper as a temporary fix. However, if the mattress itself is not working for you any longer, then a topper can’t fix the root problem.

Those are 5 signs that it’s time for a new mattress. However, it’s never as easy as just buying a new mattress. The most common problem when you buy a new one is where does the old mattress go? Your apartment can get crowded if you have your new mattress as well as the old one that you’re trying to get rid of. Many cities don’t allow mattresses to be placed on the curb. Mattresses are also unwieldy and can be difficult to transport to a designated landfill; you may even need a truck.

Mattress removal, though, doesn’t have to be difficult, stressful, or expensive. Just schedule a pickup with our team at Junk Works whenever it works for you, and we’ll come and get it. We also pick up old bed frames or box springs, and transport all of it for recycling or safe disposal. It’s a hassle-free experience for you and ensures you catch some great z’s.
