7 Spring Cleaning Tips to Refresh Your Home
Spring is in the air, and it’s time to clean away the winter blues. While spring cleaning may seem like a tedious chore, it is a great way to breathe fresh air and new life into the home.
Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be a lot of hard work, especially if you get the family involved. Plan to do it over a few days, so it is not overwhelming.
Start small by dusting the blinds and taking out the trash. Look at what needs the most attention, and then tackle that first. This could be the kitchen, or starting in the kid’s bedroom, sorting out the old toys from the new.
Planning where to start eliminates that feeling of impending doom, and puts it in the trash with the other items you no longer need.
1. Clean the doormats
Some people will have different door mats for each season and holiday. Regardless, giving it a good clean will make the front entrance look organized and welcoming.
A good beating to remove the dust and leaves, followed by a burst with a hose or pressure washer to remove the walked-in stubborn grime, will result in a new doormat again.
2. Wash reusable shopping bags
Since the pandemic and the coming into effect of by-laws that banned plastic bags in stores, we have been suddenly overrun with reusable bags.
Although they last a long time, they also tend to get dirty. Due to leaky containers, spilled milk or detergents, and rainwater and snowmelt, they can start to look somewhat shabby.
The great news is that you can place reusable shopping bags in with your regular washing, and they will come out looking as good as new again.
3. Wipe down the walls
Sometimes, we can forget to wash the walls. In fact, until we run a wet cloth with some dish soap over the walls, we do not realize how much dirt can stick to them.
Luckily, you don’t need to use a lot of energy to clean them. Swiffer pads can work just as well, and they air dry quickly.
4. Refresh the carpets
Regularly vacuuming your carpets is a great way to remove pet dander, environmental grime, and your everyday general dirt. However, using a carpet cleaner to really get the dirt out will bring back their original colour.
You can also sprinkle baking soda on the carpets before you begin vacuuming. This helps remove stubborn stains, dirt, and even smells trapped in the fibres you may no longer smell.
5. Reorganize the pantry and fridge
You may have started this task last spring with a few storage containers here and some labels placed there. However, a month later, you are back to just throwing things into any space you see.
Clear containers, which you can easily label, come in different sizes and can fit in the pantry, floor-level cupboards, and even the fridge. They help you to clearly see what is in them, and keep everything neat and tidy.
A place for everything will help you feel more relaxed and organized in the kitchen.
6. Declutter your home
Of course, spring cleaning often results in a lot of things being thrown out. Thus, landfills see an increase in traffic, and garage sale season starts up.
Still, this really is the best time to declutter. From junk drawers to dens and garages to basements, getting rid of things just taking up space helps refresh and organize your home.
Sort out what you would like to donate, whether to schools or thrift stores. However, make sure that these items are still in good condition. Any items that are broken, cannot be recycled, or are otherwise unusable can go to the landfill.
Additionally, check out junk removal services to find out what can be taken there and what cannot. This will save you a lot of time, money, and hassles.
7. Consider storage bins
After decluttering, you need somewhere to store the items you are keeping. Investing in good storage will be a great help.
From new shelves to clear plastic bins, there is a wide range of storage materials available that will work in any room and space, for items large and small and everything in between.
