Getting The Garden Ready For Planting Season

After another brutal Canadian winter, folks are eager to get out to their gardens and bring them back to life this spring.  Before the planting begins of any new flowers or vegetables there is some preparation work that needs to be done in that garden. This is probably the most intense work you’ll do all season long. After this, it’s just about watering and harvesting! Here are some of the things you want to do to get your garden ready for planting season:

Yank Up the Weeds

Despite all your effort to keep your gardening weed free there’s always the random weed trying to make an appearance. These might be left over plants from last year or new ones that are sprouting in the warmer weather. You’ll find that it is much easier to pull them out now then trying to eradicate them in between the plants that you plan on growing. You definitely want to pull them out by the roots before they have a chance to go to seed.

Prune the Shrubs

If you have shrubbery that flowers from late into the fall, then now is the time to print them back. This will actually allow them to flourish stronger in the blooming season. You should take that same approach with any trees that are on your property.

Add Fertilizer

When was the last time you tested your soil? This might be a good time to check your pH levels. That can help you determine the best type of fertilizer to mix in with your soil. It’s a good idea to add fertilizer a few weeks before planting in order for the soil to absorb all the nutrients.

Remove Debris
