How to Thoroughly Clean up Your Yard in 5 Easy Steps

With spring in full bloom and everyone getting outside to enjoy the warmer weather, it’s only natural to start getting your yard ready for outdoor relaxation and fun. An attractive, clean yard with soft, green grass will do wonders for your mental health, especially if you’ve been cooped up inside for the long winter months. If you’ve decided to start preparing your yard for the warm season and are committed to tidying it up, below are some essential steps to get the process going smoothly and efficiently. Soon enough (with a little prep work and patience), you’ll have the best-looking yard in the entire neighbourhood!

1. Initial Clean Up

Initially, you want to get started with your yard work once all the snow on the ground has completely thawed out. Get to work by clearing all debris from your yard such as fallen branches, leaves, dead shrubs and any other garbage that has accumulated over the winter months. You may want to look into some disposal options for your yard waste at this time. Rake your lawn to get it looking clean and free from debris. Keep in mind that surprising items can be found on your lawn after the winter months (such as glass or animal waste) so you may want to wear gloves throughout the cleaning process.

2. Bring Out Your Landscaping Tools

Now is the perfect time to make sure all your landscaping tools are ready to go. The last thing you want is a damper on your plans because you have to replace something or make a trip to the store before you can continue. A dull blade on your lawn mower can damage your grass and give an uneven cut which doesn’t look good. Make sure your rake, lawn mower and all gardening tools are in good working condition and rust-free before you begin cleaning up your lawn and garden. If in doubt about any of your tools, refer to the instruction manual for guidance. Also remember to check on your deck, patio or shed. These structures can potentially become damaged during the winter months so it’s important to ensure they are sturdy, safe and free from damage.

3. Mow Your Lawn and Fertilize

Once you’ve cleaned up your lawn, you should be able to take a good look at it and determine which areas need a bit more help. Fertilize areas that look thin and patchy. Generally, it is best to apply fertilizer to your lawn after you’ve mowed it. Make sure you water it regularly as this is a part of regular maintenance that will impact the health and visual appeal of your lawn.

4. Mulching and Pruning

Once early summer hits, you’ll want to get started on mulching your lawn. Spread mulch generously and you will notice that your yard looks rejuvenated. Stick to high-quality mulch for the best results and spread it evenly around any trees, bushes or garden areas on your lawn. Mulching definitely helps provide nutrients to your greenery, which keeps your lawn looking great for the warmer months ahead.

And don’t forget to prune any dead plants, shrubs, and trees so that the nutrients you feed your lawn don’t end up going to waste on what’s already dying. Cut away branches or leaves that are dead, damaged, and decaying so that what’s left is vibrant and likely to thrive. This will encourage more healthy growth and your lawn will reward you in the months to come.

5. Protect Your Plants

Once late fall begins and the weather gets colder, it’s time to start thinking about which plants on your lawn need extra protection or maintenance throughout the winter months. Some plants and foliage will need to be protected from the snow and cold weather so that they can bloom again come spring. You will want to cover these plants with burlap or blankets and add mulch around the base of the plants to keep them as insulated as possible. It may be sad to have to cover up these beauties but remember that it will be well worth it to have healthy, thriving plants again, once winter is over.

Cleaning your yard can be a pain, but the sooner you tackle it, the more your lawn will flourish. Maintenance should be year-round for the best results.
